Epilepsy is the fourth most common neurological disorder in the world. If you have epilepsy, surges of electrical activity in your brain can cause recurring seizures. We can help you understand everything you need to know about epilepsy and what you can do about it.
Causes of epilepsy are different for each person, and some people have no identifiable cause. In others, doctors can trace epilepsy directly to genetics, brain trauma, autoimmune disorders, metabolic issues, or infectious diseases. Each cause has different signs, diagnoses, and treatment options.
Knowing you’re having a seizure and diagnosing the type of seizure or epilepsy syndrome can be difficult. Even if it’s unclear whether you’ve had a seizure, you should see a doctor if you suspect, or people tell you, that there are times when you aren’t aware of what you're doing.
The doctor would try to figure out if you had a seizure and what caused it. If another medical condition, like diabetes, caused your seizure, you will need treatment for that condition. If your doctor thinks you have epilepsy, they will probably order some tests and prescribe medicine to keep you from having more seizures.
Although there is no known cure for epilepsy, developments in treatment have made it possible for most people to achieve seizure control. The first treatment step is usually to find the right medicine or Anti-Epileptic Drug (AED). If seizures continue to happen, other treatments like devices, dietary therapies, or surgery can help control seizures.
People with epilepsy may experience health problems other than seizures. These problems could relate to the seizures, or they could be due to whatever is causing the epilepsy. For example, you may experience mood problems, changes related to seizure timing or side effects of medicines. Others may experience issues with sleeping, thinking and memory, or socializing with others. In rare instances, early death or SUDEP (Sudden Unexpected Death in Epilepsy) can occur.
Recognizing when any of these challenges happen can help you and your health care team figure out how to treat them. More
